It's always a terrible feeling when you realize that you're about to run out of room on your hard drive, and it's even worse when you have no idea what's taking up all that space. WinDirStat Portable is a lightweight program that lets users quickly identify the biggest space hogs on their machines and then take action to tidy things up.

The program's interface is plain and utilitarian. When the program is launched, a dialog box asks users to select the drives or folders they want to analyze. The program then scans the selected locations and displays the results as a treemap, with rectangles of various sizes and colors representing the files on the drive. This visual representation is a great way to get an idea of what's on your hard drive with just a quick glance. WinDirStat also displays a directory list and extension list, and both of these interact with each other and the treemap; click on a folder or file type in one view, and it will be highlighted in the others. WinDirStat lets users view folder properties, locate them in Windows explorer, and either move files to the Recycle Bin or delete them permanently. The built-in Help file is well-written and thorough, providing plenty of information about each of the program's features. Overall, WinDirStat Portable is nothing fancy, but it's a great way to get a quick overview of your computer's contents, and its portability makes it a good choice for IT professionals who need to assess the contents of multiple machines.
