Design 3D CX for Windows Editor's review
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.Strata 3D CX is the latest version of this well established 3D modeling and rendering program. The newest features match those included in applications that cost thousands of dollars more: HDRI lighting, SDS (polygon subdivision) modeling, a new global lighting system called the "Lightdome", primitive "melding", seamless workflow integration with Adobe PhotoShop to support layers in .psd format right into the program!Of course, the Strata renderer has always been well know for its superb quality, but, CX is about 30% faster than it's previous version! It has had it's rendering engine finely tuned in both raytracer and radiosity modes. Recently, Strata released an update (free download to CX owners) version with even more rendering engine optimization that I can attest to a better than 15% increase over the CX version!I have seen each release become better and better over the past few years- CX is truly one of the very best "complete" (as in nothing more to buy.. no modules to add, no "more advanced version", etc.. no limitations on rendering sizes or types) 3D modeling/rendering software deals left, anywhere! HIGHLY recommended for beginners and advanced users alike.Pros: Full featured 3D modeling and rendering program, and the fetaures seem to grow and increase with each new release. Anything can be modeled here, very intuitive interface, high quality renderings, animation capabilities. Flash export, built in Toon renderer, integrated .pdf and .pdf file support. The Stratacafe (http://www.stratacafe.com) is free to all Strata users as a resource for free models and textures, competitions, forums for discussions and to get help from. The price is VERY affordable, and version upgrades are quite reasonably priced, as well.Cons: The SDS modeler is in its first version so it is not fully functional yet (but getting there quickly); the manual needs more illustrations and visualizations; still needs further expanded model file export options, even though that has been improved recently (.dxf, .wrl, .3ds, .fbx, .obj imports are now supported).
